Would you describe yourself as a leader or a follower?

Great leaders are aware of their own style and make the effort to learn how their style actually comes across to their team. They learn to flex their leadership style to individual team members so that they communicate and behave in ways that motivate and inspire. Leadership can also vary in style - are you someone who dictates the group and doesn't listen to anyone else's opinion? Or do you lead with a more bureaucratic or democratic style?

Here is what leadership professionals consider to be traits that make up a good leader:
  • Honesty: Always do the honest thing. It makes employees feel like they know where they stand with you at all times.
  • Focus: Know where you're going and have a strong stated mission to lead people on. If you're not sure, how can your people be sure? You have to be strong focus and stay the course.
  • Passion: Whatever it is, you must have passion for what you're doing. Live, breathe, eat and sleep your mission.
  • Respect: Not playing favorites with people and treating all people - no matter what station in life, what class or what rank in the org chart - the same.
  • Excellent persuasion abilities: People have to believe in you and your credibility. Image is everything and the belief people have in you, your product, your mission, your facts or your reputation are key to being a great leader. You have to persuade people of this - it doesn't just happen.

  • Integrity: They are people who are respected and worth listening to. I find in general due to all of the economic difficulties, employees prioritize and seek leaders and organizations that are honest and meet their commitments.
  • Compassion: Too many leaders these days manage with the balance sheet, often times at the expense of their employees and long-term customer relationships. Talented people want to work for leaders and organizations that truly care about their employees and the communities in which they operate.
  • Shared vision and actions: People produce real business gains and smart people need to understand what is needed and be part of the solution.
  • Engagement: Great business leaders are able to get all members of their teams engaged. They do this by offering them challenge, seeking their ideas and contributions and providing them with recognition for their contributions.
  • Empowering: True leaders make their associates feel emboldened and powerful, not diminished and powerless.
  • Fearlessness: True leaders are not afraid to take risks or make mistakes. True leaders make mistakes born from risk.

Do the following 7 things regularly to develop yourself as a leader:
  1. Actively Listen.
  2. Tell Your Story.
  3. Express Your Gratitude.
  4. Help People Understand Their Strengths.
  5. Try Something New.
  6. Simplify Something.
  7. Get Involved at the Ground Level.

How Women can emerge as a Strong Leader

Gender shouldn’t be a factor in whether or not a person can be a great leader — a person’s leadership abilities should depend on their individual strengths and personality traits. Women’s presence on management teams is generally associated with a stronger social commitment and a more participatory leadership style. Women try to play by the existing rules in the workplace and have the additional hurdle of society's perceptions of how women should act and be seen. It's difficult to think this way when cases of gender inequality are talked about in the news and on social media every day. However, if women want to be viewed as equal in the workplace, they must stand their ground and demand the respect they deserve – and it starts by behaving as if the gap has been closed.
One benefit of female leadership is an increase in measures to promote work-family balance, which is important for country development as well as for improving families’ quality of life. When women bring this strength to bear for their teams and employees, it has long-lasting implications. It improves employee retention, creates stronger team players, and develops the next generation of female role models.

  • They value work-life balance.
  • They are empathetic
  • They are nurturing
  • They make great listeners.
  • They focus on teamwork
  • They’re good at multitasking.
  • They are motivated by challenges
  • They can wear many hats
  • They lead by example
As men and women grow and continue their education, they have equal ambitions to pursue a successful professional career, with roughly equal levels of achievement. Women start out with equal determination to succeed and enter leadership. women enter the workforce and seek to advance, develop and use their skills and knowledge, they pursue strategies of fitting in that work in the short term but eventually erode their sense of self-confidence and ambition.

The Role and Status of Women in Modern Society

Women have been regarded as a symbol of spirituality in our scriptures. Yet, they have been treated badly and unequally to men. Social evils such as dowry, sati-system, child marriage, and female infanticide were widely prevalent in the early ages. But nowadays, Women empowerment is the major concern of countless political and social discussions, so we must encourage those women who are leading their life individually after facing the difficulties of being a female. The ever-evolving human desire drives the development of men and women alike. Over the past 60 years, we have witnessed a conspicuous change in women’s desire. Women wish to be less and less involved in household management and child care, and are increasingly expanding their involvement in other areas of society. The contribution of women to a society’s transition from pre-literate to literate likewise is undeniable. Basic education is key to a nation’s ability to develop and achieve sustainability targets. Research has shown that education can improve agricultural productivity, enhance the status of girls and women, reduce population growth rates, enhance environmental protection, and widely raise the standard of living. Women’s formal and informal labor can transform a community from a relatively autonomous society to a participant in the national economy. The role of women in the urban and rural workforce has expanded exponentially in recent decades.

A woman’s character is much more responsible, stable and consistent. She is capable of absorbing many changes and coping with long-term challenges — a quality that comes from her natural ability to carry an embryo and develop life within her. The female nature and drive to create a supportive and embracing environment will be expressed in society in creating healthy and proper conditions for bonding between people. Without such an environment that only women can design and manage, the men will continue to quarrel like children.

Women today are eager to take up professions and work. Thus, they enjoy equal respect and dignity in the family. Women in free India also enjoy equal pay for equal work in comparison to men. Also, there are provisions of maternity leave for them. The girls in urban areas are almost at par in education with the boys. But there is a less educated female population in rural areas. This has also affected the social and economic development of rural India. Whereas, the maximum figure of female politicians in the world is from India. Women have occupied significant positions i.e. of President, Prime Minister, Speaker of the Lok Sabha and other high offices. “Indira Gandhi”, is the first female who held the office of the Prime Minister for 15 years.
There has been a steady transformation in the status of the women in comparison to earlier periods. Women of today take part completely in areas such as politics, status, military sectors, economic, service, and technology sectors. Moreover, they have contributed wholly in sports too. Thus, they have occupied a dignified position in family and society. However, ending crimes against women is still a challenge. We can prevent ills by ensuring women autonomy, also increased participation and decision making power in the family and public life both.

Workplace Safety

A leader is the one, who drives execution and gets results not only from the team but from the numbers as well. I am definitely a motivator and encourage my team to grow. In a business setting, this can mean directing workers and colleagues with a strategy to meet the company's needs. But as a women you can face many problems in leadership roles.
A women can be a rare face in safety, particularly in leadership roles. Women in authority are more likely to encounter sexual harassment from senior leaders and colleagues. The result came out from the research states that women in supervisory roles had a higher tendency of experiencing workplace harassment. She can be harassed both from her subordinates and from higher-level management within the company.
There are extra ordinary women who are able to successfully navigate all the domains of corporate life. They display a heightened awareness of their environment which enhances their capacity for judgement. But their safety is the major issue because they deserve to be safe.
Women safety involves strategies, practices and policies which aim to reduce gender-based violence (or violence against women), including women's fear of crime. Women's safety involves safe spaces.

How does gender affect power?

Gender shapes power, from the ‘private’ relationships of the household to the highest levels of political decision-making.  Research has found that people view women as less competent than men and lacking in leadership potential. Men are more likely than women to engage in dominant or aggressive behaviours, to initiate negotiations, and to self-select into competitive environments-behaviours likely to facilitate professional advancement.
Even in societies and organizations that value gender equality and invest in initiatives to reach it, women are underrepresented in most senior-level leadership positions. Men and women have different preferences when it comes to achieving high-level positions in the workplace.

Inequalities between men and women are one of the most persistent patterns in the distribution of power.

Often what it means to be a ‘woman’ is to be powerless (quiet, obedient, accommodating). A ‘real man’, by contrast, is powerful (outspoken, in control, able to impose his will), particularly in relation to women. These gender roles tend to perpetuate the power inequalities that they are based on.
Ø Gender shapes how we understand what ‘power’ is in the first place
Ø Gender shapes institutions and how they affect the distribution of power
Ø Gender shapes power inequalities based on other divisions, such as class and ethnicity, and vice versa

If we think about gender, we’re better at thinking and working politically
If we think politically, we’re better at supporting gender equality.

What are the main challenges for female leaders?

Workplace equality is an uphill battle female leaders fought for decades. Women and young girls everywhere face an immense range of challenges-from the inability to access food, education and employment to the threat of gender-based violence.

CHALLENGES-
  •       Education: One of the biggest challenges facing women is educational inequality. 7% of women are most concerned about education and schooling -- both for themselves and their children.
  •       Can’t travel alone: Between street harassment and the very real threat of violence hanging over our heads every day, women have more to worry about even when they simply go out in public alone, let alone when they travel. It's possible to travel solo, of course, but women have to weigh the consequences in a way that men rarely do.
  •       Interests are devalued: It's a sad truth that as soon as women become associated in something, it automatically loses status in society's eyes. You can see this in the workforce — when more women enter an occupation, it frequently loses respect — as well as female dominated fandom, which are largely looked down on in other corners of the Internet.
  •       Sexism, Racism and economic inequality: The extremely potent combination of sexism, racism and economic inequality- this may seem like too broad an answer but it pretty much covers it on both a domestic and global front. All of the individual challenges we may be tempted to rank are symptomatic of these massive systemic power imbalances, working in tandem.

Source: (Google Image)
  •       The lack of respect for care-giving: Women in the world, particularly in developing and middle-income countries, face the far more elemental problem of still being considered property.
  •       The lack of women in positions of power: One of the struggles that underlies all of our policy battles is the continued lack of women in positions of power. The sooner we understand that the lack of women in leadership roles holds back not only women, but all people, the sooner we will be able to advance society as a whole.
  •       Inequality of fundamental and economic opportunity: The biggest challenge facing women internationally is the fundamental and economic opportunity that the majority of women in the world face. A 21st century feminism should work to extend the human rights, political freedoms, economic opportunities enjoyed by women globally.
  •       Increasing rates of maternal mortality: The greatest challenges women throughout the world face are increasing rates of maternal mortality. According to WHO, 830 women die every day from “preventable causes related to pregnancy”. This leads to untimely and preventable deaths.

Ø Their perspectives and experiences of the women must help shape our collective future. If we want to forge the best solutions for expanding peace and security moving forward, then we need to give smart, dynamic and strong women a seat at the decision-making table-both here at home and around the world.
